The economic crisis causing the humanitarian crisis are the root causes of Afghans’ loss of access to food, water, shelter, and health care are almost all economic: millions of dollars in lost income, spiking prices, and the collapse of the country’s banking sector.

Unfortunately, Afghanistan is stuck in a low-level equilibrium trap with very slow economic growth (around or below the population growth rate — meaning the lives of most people will not improve anytime soon). Poverty, unemployment, unequal opportunity, and malnutrition are examples of social problems.
